Agia Triada Monastery  E-mail

The monastery of Agia Triada means Holy Trinity. The monastery is a feast for your senses.

It was built in the 17th century by Venetian monks(2 brothers), on top of another church that was destroyed. The style however is not Venetian, but more Byzantine. The monastery contains 3 large domes, a chapel and a courtyard. Photo's are prohibited inside the chapel, but there is enough to see and take photos besides the chapel

In 1812 the monastery was partially destroyed by the Turks, but was soon after already restored. The monastery also houses a small library and museum. Definately worth a visit. During summertime it is possible an entry-fee of a few euro's will be asked. You can find Agia Triada on the Akrotiri just east of the city Chania.

Tip: when going there, afterwards drive a little north to 'Gouverneto'. Here you can find another beautiful monastery. This monastery has a lot of resemblance to Agia Triada, but looks a little more like a fortress on itself.
While Agia Triada is open every month of the year, does not have short opening hours and is lenient towards tourism, Gouverneto however is closed in winter.
Also in summertime, the opening hours are pretty short:
Open 09:00-1200 and 17:00-19:00 on Monday/Tuesday/Thursday. Open 09:00-11:00 and 17:00-20:00 on Saturday/Sunday. Closed on Wednesday and Friday. You are also only allowed to enter approprially dressed, and camera's are prohibited when nearing this monastery already.

Note once again that these are the opening times for monastery Gouverneto. Agia Triada is open every day.
