Doreen Suites, Kalamaki
Doreen Suites, a highly recommended visit
A hotel really worth a small article: Doreen Suites in Kalamaki (Kato Galatas) near Chania. Website: www.doreen.gr
I visited this hotel last month. And it is perfect. A great location, superb host and it just looks gorgeous. The hotel itself receives a 9,6 on booking.com at the time of this writing.
The rooms are very clean and have this romantic, Greek, yet still a bit luxurious look.
In it is all you need from a hotel. You can cook, it has a refridgerator with freezer, a shower with bathtub, and the balconies are even pretty big. The rooms are equipped with television and the hotel has wifi. For those that wish to stay in for an evening that is good news.
The owner itself is usually at the desk. He will do anything to make your stay as comfortable as possible. It is worth noting that his English is really very good. Which can be important for those that do not speak Greek.
The hotel itself has a charming look, and what makes it even more perfect is it's location:It's really very near the beach. According to the website, it's 20 meters. This could actually be correct. It's only a few steps really. When stepping out on your balcony, especially at night, you can listen to the ocean.
The hotel is surrounded by various bars, beachbars and restaurants, and almost next to it is a really good supermarket called the No Problem. Just around the corner are 2 busstops leading into both directions. Which makes it ideal for those that wish to travel around as well.
If you like going for long walks into nature, then just a few hundred meters away starts the place Agii Apostoloi with it's beautiful nature. During summer it's a popular place for biking and joggers, but in my personal opinion in the offseason it's even better: little more peaceful and filled with flowers, even during winter(or especially during winter).
A bus travelling to Chania passes by every 15 minutes or so. Enjoy it's beautiful harbor and romantic shopping streets. Because it's situated right outside Chania, you can visit Chania whenever you want(even possible to walk there as I do on occasion) and mingle in the crowd, and whenever you want peace and a beautiful beach you can just stay at home near your hotel.
The article I am writing here is part of our Winter In Crete campaign. Doreen Suites is excellent during summer, but every bit as good during winter(or fall/spring). They have a good heating system, and the doors seal shut. Might sound weird to some that I actually write that, but those who visit Greece in winter will probably know how important that is. In Greece it is normal that balcony doors have openings at the sides even when they are closed. During winter it can actually get pretty chilly outside at night, and when the doors aren't winterproof, it will get chilly inside as well. Luckily not the case here.
Most facilities in Kalamaki are open during winter, because Kalamaki is a place where Greeks live(not just for tourists like some villages). The beachbars are usually closed during winter because the water rises and it gets windy, but other restaurants and bars are still open. Crete's nature is even better during winter, when the landscape is filled with all kinds of different flowers. Temperature can differ, but is usually still pretty warm compared to what we are used to up north in Europe. From personal experience I can tell that last time I visited in December and February, it was still above 20 degrees.I could really recommend giving this hotel a try. And especially if you plan to visit Crete in the offseason.
