All the photos on this page have descriptions. All photos are copyrighted. Please do not use them without my consent.
This is between the harbour and Nea Chora. Just love the colour of the flowers before sunset.
This is one of the streets in the old town of Chania. It is located east of the Halidon(when walking towards the harbor), between the shopping street Halidon and the Splanzia(near the Splanzia actually).
These beautiful streets look artistic especially because of the combination of new livable houses between older ruins.
The beach of Agia Marina in the late afternoon. Looking towards the small island Agii Theodori.
This photo was taken by my best friend Amy. I afterwards took the RAW photo and made a few different exposures in order to create this HDR.
This is taken below Agii Apostoloi church at the far side, just a little before sunset.
Had to redo a photo I already uploaded once. Took this one in Chania, near the old harbour(just west of it).
The photo of this man fishing was taken right before sunset.
Took the RAW photo and turned it into an HDR.
Dramatic sunset at Agii Apostoloi church.
I used 3 different exposed photos to create this HDR so the clouds as well as the foreground would remain visible.
Late afternoon at Agii Apostoloi.
Time for a new one. Did not have much time the last couple of weeks, but here we go again:

The city of Sfakia in the south-west of Crete. The small harbor offers many great bars and restaurants to relax.
Sunset at Kalamaki beach, looking towards Stalos, Agia Marina and Platanias.
Chania old town and it's charming bars and restaurants.
Beach of Kalamaki. Looking towards Agii Apostoloi.
The big anchor just outside the national museum at the old Venetian harbor of Chania.
The beautiful beach of Kalamaki. Looking towards Stalos.
The right side of the old town of Chania. This is the Byzantine part, near the fishrestaurants at the old harbor.
Sunset seen from Agii Apostoloi looking over Kalamaki towards Agia Marina and Platanias
Sunset at a very stormy summersday in Agia Marina.
The chapel in the harbor of Kalamaki. Seen through one of the ruins besides the road.
Sunset over Kalamaki beach.
One of the many ruins in Malaxa, Crete.
Malaxa is a great town to visit. The people are friendly, the view is amazing and the food there terrific.
Up and down Malaxa are many ruins, yet I can't really advice anyone to visit those. There are many dogs that are running loose and defend their territory.
A view from Agios Apostolis looking towards Kalamaki, Agia Marina and Platanias.
The beach of Kalamaki during a stormy day. Looking towards the Bamboo bar and Salavantes restaurant.
Sunset from Agii Apostoloi, near Kalamaki.
West-side of the harbor of Chania. This is near Nea Chora. Photo taken late in the afternoon.
Sit, relax and enjoy the view at the beautiful old Venetian harbor of Chania.
Photo: east-side of the harbor of Chania. Photo taken from restaurant Monastiri looking towards the lighthouse.
The harbor of Chania on a sunny day.
This photo was taken in September. In June, July and August there is less chance of seeing it like this as it is then usually more crowded with tourists. Photo taken near restaurant Plateia and Monastiri, looking towards the old mosque.
The harbor of Chania and it's many bars and restaurants.
This photo is taken in front of the old mosque looking towards Apothiki Cafe and Kavouras restaurant. Both come highly recommended for a visit.
Exactly at the other side you can also see the bar Thea, which is slightly above the harbor and offers a great view while enjoying your drink.
Another photo of a sunset in the old Venetian harbor of Chania. Looking towards the famous lighthouse.
Photo taken past the old fishrestaurants
The small harbor of Sfakion, Sfakia.
Dramatic sky of Kares before a storm, in HDR.
Sunset over Malaxa.
The old road. Here it runs through Kalamaki(looking towards Bamboo Bar). Photo taken right after sunset.
Agii Apostoloi
The old Venetian harbor of Chania. This is the backside where all the fishrestaurants are.
Harbor of Chania on a sunny day. The old venetian part of it.
The gorge of Mili. This is just outside one of the churches.
From here on it becomes a little harder, as you are still quite high and water is running over the path.
Almost like a fantasy setting, but it's actually very real.
One of the many ruins in the ghosttown of the gorge of Mili.
This is one of the less well preserved houses. Most ones are still in good condition and can actually be entered.
One of the portals at Milon, the ghosttown in the gorge of Mili.
At the ruins of Milon in the gorge of Mili. The ghosttown that was abandoned in the 16th century is still so well preserved.
One of the small streets of the old town of Chania.
They might seem like not too bright and slow animals, but these mountaingoats can get anywhere and to anything.
Photo taken in Aradena.
Little north of Kares we had to stop to take a photo of this beautiful sky
One of the many (many many) ruins of ancient Aradena: Aradin.Aradena lies in the south of Crete, beyond Anopolis.
These ruins lie near the village, and are from Roman, Byzantine and Venetian times.
The village was destroyed by the Turks in the Ottoman empire, along with Anopolis.

These days the village of Aradena itself is also abandoned. It was abandoned after a vendetta over a cowbell, which lead to people fleeing the town. Many fled to Anopolis.
Sunset from Malaxa.
Malaxa is a village in the mountains near Chania and Mournies. In 2001 the total population was only 178 people. According to the villagers, only about 80 people live there now.
Malaxa also has some great ancient ruins above and below the village, along with several houses that are currently also becoming ruins. Still a great place to go for it's view and an exceptional good restaurant right before the village itself. What you also can expect is a great real Cretan warm welcome in one of the few small bars there
A view form the little harbor of Chora Sfakion, Crete, in the south of Crete. Wonderful view from there towards Loutro.
The lighthouse of Chania during a summerstorm right after sunset. High waves clashing against it.
The harbor of Chania, near the fish restaurants (somwhere between restaurant Monastiri and Vasiliko).
This is also the last photo of the day until I return from my vacation (around the 20th of September).
Another one of the gorge of Deliana to Mesavlia.
An almost perfect gorge, as it can be entertaining for sportive people, but also for families. An easy walk, but with a great scenery.
Was a great sunset, seen from Agii Apostoloi.
Love sunsets. Looking towards Stalos, Agia Marina and Platanias.
A view over Kalamaki in the late afternoon.
Photo taken from Agii Apostoloi, looking towards Stalos, Agia Marina and Platanias.
Vultures in the gorge of Deliana.
When you visit the gorge of Deliana to Mesavlia, this is common sight. If you are lucky, they will give you a whole show in the sky.
A beautiful day with high waves at Kalamaki beach, looking towards the Blue Sea bar.
The harbor of Chania right before sunset.
Another one of a sunset behind Bamboo Bar at Kalamaki beach.
Kalamaki beach, looking towards the Bamboo Bar.
Photo taken by my father (visit him at www.flowersofchania.com ) and turned into a HDR by me.
One of the great beaches of Agios Apostoli (Agii Apostolous).·
Also great for watersports during summer.
Another one of the gorge of Deliana/Mesavlia.
Another sunset from Kalamaki. Photo taken in front of restaraunts Salavantes, Irida and Bamboo Bar.
Looking towards the small island Agii Theodori.
Another one of the gorgeous Deliana to Mesavlia gorge.
The gorge of Deliana and Mesavlia. An amazing place for a walk.
The gorge is about 4km in length and goes from Deliana up to Mesavlia.
The left side of the old Venetian harbor of Chania, looking towards the national museum.
An older one of mine in HDR. It's the chapel of Agii Apostoloi.
The beautiful old Venetian harbor of Chania. Took this photo during the quiet period.
In summer it is much more crowded.
Chania's old Venetian harbour by night.
Photo taken from the lighthouse looking towards the fishrestaurants
Restaurations are ongoing at the city wall of Chania's old town.
Some ruins near lake Agia, close to the city of Chania.
The White mountains during winter. Photo taken between Theriso and Meskla.
The mountains between Theriso and Meskla.
The popular beach of Frangokastello. Quiet here, but a lot more crowded during summer.
The recently excavated amfitheater at Aptera.
Read more about it HERE.
Looks so surreal, but that is how it also was at that moment.
Photo taken between Kalamaki and Agios Apostoli.
The lovely beach of Kalyves.Kalyves is a great place to visit.
A charming real Greek village that has enough to offer for tourists as well.
Photo is taken next to the restaurant/bar Mistrali, which is also a great place to get a drink or something to eat.
This photo is taken east of Chania(looking towards Chania) at the beginning of the Akrotiri.
The square at the Halidon entry of the harbor of Chania.
A great place to relax while enjoying the view and other people.
On an extra note: just to the left of this photo a new bar opened: Apothiki. Well worth checking out.
It is a combination of a bar and a club, located where Klik used to be(next to the Kavouras, which is also definately worth trying out).
The small island called Lazaretta can be seen pretty well from the beach of Nea Chora.
Many boat-trips that take tourists around the island of Agios Theodori(Thodorou) also drop them off for a few hours at Lazaretta.
A tiny island with a small beach and a chapel. It is rich in sea-life, so if you wish to dive this place comes recommended.
Took this photo during winter, just left of the famous beach of Frangokastello.
Cats of Nea Chora.
The streets of Chania and Nea Chora are full of cats.
Most of these cats are not shy because they are quite used to sharing these streets with large crowds of people.
Although tourists mostly love them, restaurant owners are usually less happy with their presence.
The beautiful lake of Kournas in winter.
The lake of Kournas is a must visit if you are ever in West-Crete. It is only a little south of Georgioupolis.
The beautiful lake of Kournas in winter.

The old Venetian harbor of Chania in winter. At the other side you can see the old mosque.
To the left of it are some recommandable restaurants. To the right are the great charming bars of Chania that attract so many people each summer.
The mountains and nature between Theriso and Meskla.
The old venetian harbor of Chania during winter. View from above the national museum.
Frangokastello beach during winter. Popular tourist place in summer, but in my opinion even better experienced in winter.Well known for it's dark sandy beaches and castle.
Well known for it's dark sandy beaches and castle.
Kalamaki beach seen from Agii Apostoloi, with the white mountains peaking behind it.
At this day in December, the water was still quite nice, giving even greater contrast with the snow.·Photo taken right after sunset.
The natural springs of Argiroupoli.
Argiroupoli in winter.
Georgioupoli(or Georgioupolis) during wintertime. In summer, there will be considerably more people.·
The photo is taken on the long pier·that leads towards the small chapel.
The old venetian harbour of Chania at night, looking towards the side of the fish-restaurants.
The beautiful lake of Kournas in winter.
Ruins near Kum Kapi and Splanzia, Chania. Some of these are real uninhabitable ruins, others are inhabited.
One of the small streets in the old town of Chania. Straight on is the venetian harbour.
The old ruins of the Splanzia in the old town of Chania.
One of the small streets of the old town of Chania.
I took this photo in the winter. In the summer it's usually more crowded with both people and tables.
The old Venetian harbour of Chania.
I took this photo from the bar "Kavouras" which is close to the old mosque in the harbour.
The harbour of Chania as seen from the national museum.
The great cisterns of Aptera are one of the many things that remains of the Roman occupation.

They are usually flooded in winter and spring. During summer and early fall, you can walk inside.
The road south of Imbros to Sfakia and Frangokastello often reminds me of a racetrack.
Lake Agia, south of the city Chania. Famous for it's birdlife.
The white mountains seen from the road between Theriso and Meskla.
Another photo of Frangokastello beach. You can see the old fortress of Frangokastello which is located almost directly at the beach.
The beautiful lake of Kournas. Especially in winter if you are lucky, you will see some turtles swimming around.
The mountains behind Frangokastello. There are actually several gorges within these mountains as well.
The harbour of Nea Chora, Chania.
Some ruins near the beach of Frangokastello.
Ruins near the Splanzia in Chania old-town.
One of the small streets in the Venetian part of Chania Old Town.
The road between Theriso and Meskla.
The old Venetian harbour of Chania.
Photo taken between Theriso and Meskla.
This is actually from outside of a restaurant which can easily be noticed at the side of the road, where you can have an outstanding lunch or diner with a great view.
A few gooses enjoying the paradise that is the lake of Kournas.
Photo taken in front of restaurant/taverna Korissia, which is open all throughout the year.
Whether you are on Crete in the winter, spring, summer or fall, a visit to lake Kournas is a must. Lake Kournas lies just south of Georgioupoli.
The Bamboo Bar in Kalamaki.
Near closing time finally gave me the opportunity to take a longer exposure photo from the charming inside of this beautiful bar.
The old harbour of Chania by night.
The beach and town of Georgioupolis.
Sunrise over West-Crete, as seen from an airplane.
A Christmas tree on the beach of Nea Chora.
Near the natural springs of Argiroupoli.
Especially because of all the natural water coming out of the mountain at various spots, there is a lot of green nature here.
The city of Chania has been given a Christmas make-over. Merry christmas to all.
On the photo: the Agora in Chania.
One of the small sidestreets of the old town of Chania.
Visit the natural springs of Argiroupoli. A magical place that can be found right before the village of Argiroupoli.
The springs can be found around various restaurants and bars. And even within a lot of these bars and restaurants.
The lake of Kournas.

A natural water lake hidden inside a valley south of Kalyves(or better: just south of Georgioupoli).
The lake of Kournas is not only a beautiful place, but is also the home to many birds and turtles.
In the summer you can do many watersports here, or just enjoy the sun near one of the bars and restaurants.
But it is the winter when you can truly enjoy this place for the magical place it is
One of the natural springs of Argiroupoli.
The springs can be found right before the old village of Argiroupoli. A beautiful place to visit, full of natural springs and small waterfalls.
The village of Argiroupoli can be found just south of Georgoupoli and Episkopi.
Boats at night in the harbour of Chania. Long exposure photo.
The cicade is familiar for the sound -or music- it makes during hot periods of summerdays. Many in Greece consider it as relaxing. The sound is even sold as relaxation therapy.

Photo taken in Kalyves, Crete.
The Sea Daffodil, also called Sand Lily(or Pancratium maritimum), is on the endangered species list.

But in Autumn beaches in Crete are full of these flowers. Photo taken in Maleme. More info about the Sea Daffodil: http://www.flowersofchania.com/html/pancratium_maritimum.html
The ruins of Agios Apostoli. Now stand abandonen for a few decades already, but in the past they have been used by the military and has it functioned as a school/summercamp.
A photo of the west-side of Chania old-town. This is a bit behind the national museum towards Nea Chora.
One more of the gorge Deliana - Mesavlia.
The lighthouse is the mark of Chania. You will find it on almost all tourist objects you can buy in the many shops in Chania. Built by the Venetians 5 centuries ago and later around 1830 restored by the Egyptians.
The gorge of Deliana(to Mesavlia). This photo is taken about halfway, where one can see a big cave up in the mountain. This is the spot where usually most vultures can be seen.
The gorge of Deliana(to Mesavlia). One of the shorter gorges. Easy to walk and usually very quiet. But (perhaps because of that) filled with plants and animals.
A small chapel before the entrance to Agii Apostoloi church between Kalamaki and Agios Apostoli(agii apostoli).
View over Chania. Taken from Malaxa.
The harbour of Chania and it's charming bars and restaurants. On the left you can see the old Turkish mosque Yiali Tzami(meaning: seaside mosque). The including minaret, which can still be seen on ancient photos, was destroyed when the last Turks left Crete. This mosque of Kioutsouk Hassan, which is actually placed on top of another church, is now used for art exhibitions.
Old steps at the end of the alley between the Halidon and Theofanous street (past Tamam restaurant) in the Old Town of Chania.
Taken in one of the typical alleys of the old town of Chania(west part of the Halidon).
The ruins at Agios Apostoli, Crete. According to the stories, they have been used both as a military facility as a school in the past.
Another one of the ruins in Agios Apostoli. By stories I heard they were used as a military complex and a school before being abandoned.
The road between the south side of the Imbros gorge back to Imbros town.
Butterfly sets down on a thistle in the gorge of Imbros.
Taken on the beach of Maleme (west of Platanias) during sunset.
One of the chapels on the side of the road in Agios Apostoli. Many of these chapels, or small churches, are memorials to a person that has died(in some cases on that very spot). Some of them, like this one, is dedicated to a Saint.
The lighthouse of the old Venetian harbour of Chania.
The harbour of Chania. You usually won't find it this quiet in summer.
Taken from Malaxa with a view over Chania and the towns west of Chania.
Gorge of Deliana(also sometimes called Deleana).
One of the small streets between the first part of Chania's old harbour and the fishing restaurants.

One of the small streets in the Venetian part of Chania's old town. Pension Lena on the photo.
Taken in Kalamaki, Crete.
The old Venetian Harbour of Chania. On the right(red building) is the national museum of Chania. You can also see one of the many glass bottom boats that can be hired for short excursions.
Boats in the harbour of Chania. This is the right side of the harbour, near the fish restaurants.
Agios Apostoli. Between Chania and Kalamaki/Stalos. Wonderful beaches, idealistic parks and great nature makes it a perfect place for people that enjoy long walks in a beautiful enviroment. The village is colourful and small. Agios Apostoli is famous for outdoors sports like tennis, jogging, cycling, volleyball and jetskying.
One of the many small shopping streets of Chania. This one can be found on the right of Halidon.
Kalamaki Beach sunset. In front of restaurant Salavantes and Bamboo Bar. The island on the photo is Agii Theodori (Thodorou) which lies across Platanias and Agia Marina.
View over Chania at night. Taken from Malaxa.
Sunset in Kalamaki, Crete, looking towards Stalos.
Malaxa, above Chania. During sunset. Perhaps one of my favourites. A very surreal image.
Sunset just north-east of Chania(beginning of Akrotiri). Looking towards the oustide villages of Chania and the mountains behind it.
Restaurant Ellotia. An excellent restaurant that has a bit of a hidden location in the Old Town of Chania. Exquisite food, great wines and a great service. Both the surroundings and the music create a deep relaxing and romantic atmosphere.
View over Chania. This is on the beginning(west side) of the Akrotiri looking towards the harbour and lighthouse of Chania.
The village of Kalyves, Crete. A beautifull village with a great beach. Worth a visit.
Gorge of Imbros.
The gorge of Deliana, Crete (located south of Kolymbari) is a joy to walk, even though a totally different experience from Imbros and Samaria. Deliana may be a wider gorge, but because it is very easy to walk one can really enjoy the beautifull surroundings. Because you will hardly(if even) meet other people there, it has become one of my favourites. Half-way through you should not forget to look up and spot some of the many vultures flying around.
The fallen tree at the gorge of Imbros
One of the small streets of Chania Old Town (west-side).
Practically every small street of Chania Old Town is a piece of art. HDR photo. Taverna Semiramis is located here.
Chania in HDR. This is one of the small streets near the Venetian Harbour(connecting the center with the fish-restaurant-area).
